On-line "Tool Box" Helps Peritoneal Dialysis Patients Prepare for Travel
Nurses who treat peritoneal dialysis patients now have a comprehensive guide to help their patients prepare for a trip. The American Nephrology Nurses' Association Peritoneal Dialysis Tool Box is available for free download at www.annanurse.org (go to "Resources" and "Publications"). The guide emphasizes thorough advance planning and includes a travel checklist, questions to ask the PD nurse, packing lists, do's and don'ts, what to do if problems arise, a wallet card, a list of travel resources, and special instructions from the PD nurse and doctor.
PD is a self-care option for patients with acute or chronic kidney failure. Patients manage their own dialysis treatment via a permanent, indwelling catheter. The Tool Box was written by Bobbie Knotek, BSN, RN, CNN, CPHQ, and Laurie Biel, BSN, RN, CNN, and was first published in the September-October 2004 issue of Nephrology Nursing Journal.
