American Nephrology Nurses Association to Convene National Summit on Nephrology Nursing Shortage
Pitman, NJ The American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) is sponsoring an invitational summit on Americas shortage of nephrology nurses on March 14-15, 2003 in Baltimore, MD. The summit is a call to action for members of the renal community who will examine the issues surrounding the shortage, discuss creative solutions, and develop a prioritized plan to attract and retain qualified RNs to nephrology nursing.
The event is part of a multi-phased project by ANNA to address the nations shortage of nurses in general and nephrology nurses in particular. The summit will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and is supported in part through an unrestricted education grant from Amgen.
Participants will include nurses, representatives from ANNA and other health care organizations; key leaders from dialysis service providers; end stage renal disease (ESRD) organizations; kidney patient groups; government officials; and special guests.
The summit is the third phase in ANNAs wide-ranging effort to address the countrys worsening RN shortage. The association began the project in 2001 by creating the ANNA Ad Hoc Committee on Recruitment and Retention. The committee was assigned to review available data on the shortage. The second phase was a survey of staff nurses in chronic, freestanding hemodialysis units, which has been completed and will be presented at the summit by Charlotte Thomas-Hawkins, PhD, RN, CNN, who worked as ANNAs Professional Practice Consultant for the survey.
When the summit action plan has been completed, ANNA will launch an ongoing project to disseminate the information, said Beth Ulrich, EdD, RN, CHE, summit director.
