American Nephrology Nurses' Association Continues Quality Improvement Initiatives with Updated Manual
PITMAN, NJ Consumers and the government don't always agree, but when the topic is quality health care, both are on the same page.
A better-informed public whose expectations have risen steadily, along with increased oversight by government agencies, have intensified the need for health care providers to consistently meet the mark when it comes to fewer errors and better outcomes.
Examples of the importance of quality care are demonstrated in the nephrology arena, where many patients rely on lifelong treatments. Quality management and oversight are critical for patients whose lives depend upon dialysis or life-saving organ transplants. Because care is ongoing, nephrology nurses and other providers must meet today's rigorous standards.
To keep them informed, the American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA; www.annanurse.org) has just released an updated edition of its landmark quality improvement guide, Applying Continuous Quality Improvement in Clinical Practice, 2nd Edition.
"ANNA and other organizations have put a great deal of energy and resources into the area of continuous quality improvement (CQI) since the 1990s," according to Billie Axley, MS, RN, CNN, who co-edited the book with Karen C. Robbins, MS, RN, CNN. "The manual keeps the ball rolling by presenting specific methods to help nephrology nurses handle the quality challenges they face every day."
The manual focuses on providing the best services to patients with renal disease in the most economical manner; satisfying the mandates of oversight organizations like the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS); and educating practitioners as they strive for optimum outcomes.
The 250-page book is organized into three sections:
- Section 1: Overview of CQI Principles and Tools key concepts, hands-on tools, root cause analysis, and Six Sigma™
- Section 2: Clinical Applications comprehensive presentation of clinical topics
- Section 3: Nephrology Community quality assessment and performance improvement, ESRD Networks, team collaboration, and research
