National Study Will Deploy Nurses as 'Falls Care Managers' to Prevent Fall-Related Injuries in Older Adults

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will fund a 5-year, $30 million national study of the effectiveness of a multi-pronged strategy to help older adults avoid falls and related injuries. The trial will test the effectiveness of deploying nurses or nurse practitioners trained as “falls care managers” to develop and deliver evidence-based prevention plans tailored to the specific risks of each individual and to monitor patients’ outcomes in consultation with their primary care providers.
