President Obama Signs the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014

On April 1, 2014, President Obama signed into law the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014. This law prevents a scheduled payment reduction for physicians and other practitioners who treat Medicare patients from taking effect on April 1, 2014. It also maintains the 0.5% update for such services that applied from January 1, 2014 through March 31, 2014 for the period April 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014. The law provides a 0% update to the 2015 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) through March 31, 2015.

ESRD Community Benefits from New Law

Inclusion of oral dialysis drugs in the bundled rate is delayed until 2024, and the cut in the bundled rate will be limited to the reduction already defined for payment years 2014 and 2015 and a reduction in the market basket adjustment for 2016 and 2017.
