Letter from ANNA to Senator Byron Dorgan, Senator Daniel Inouye, and Representative Timothy Murphy thanking them for cosponsoring the Kidney Care Quality and Education Act of 2007

July 6, 2007

The Honorable ________*
United States Senate / United States House of Representatives
322 Hart Senate Office Building / 322 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator ________*:

On behalf of the American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA), I am writing to express our appreciation to you for cosponsoring the Kidney Care Quality and Education Act of 2007 (S. 691/H.R. 1193).  As an organization dedicated to providing the highest quality care for patients suffering from kidney disease, we believe that this legislation will greatly improve our ability to prevent, treat, and educate people about kidney disease.

As you may know, ANNA is a professional nursing organization of more than 12,000 registered nurses practicing in nephrology.  ANNA members are intimately involved in the supervision and delivery of care to adults and children with kidney disease.  Our members work in a variety of settings including dialysis facilities, transplant centers, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) clinics, acute care, ambulatory clinics, and long term care.  ANNA’s purpose is to advance nephrology nursing practice and positively influence outcomes for patients with kidney disease through advocacy, scholarship, and excellence.

The Kidney Care Quality and Education Act of 2007 will ensure high quality kidney care and provide more education about kidney disease.  Specifically, this legislation will increase awareness of the disease, help patients learn self-management skills, reward providers for quality improvement and attainment, expand Medicare coverage for kidney disease education, provide uniform training for dialysis technicians, and arrange for the better understanding of patient barriers to adopting different treatment modalities.

Again, thank you for your support of the Kidney Care Quality and Education Act of 2007 (S. 691/H.R. 1193)  If you have any questions, or if we can be of assistance to you or your staff on kidney disease, nursing, or related matters, please do not hesitate to contact me, or our Washington representative, Jim Twaddell at (202) 230-5130 or james.twaddell@dbr.com

Sincerely,

Sandy Bodin, MA, RN, CNN
President
American Nephrology Nurses’ Association
