American Nephrology Nurses Association Elects 2016-17 National Officers

PITMAN, NJ – Alice Hellebrand, MSN, RN, CNN, of Dumont, NJ, has been elected to serve as national president-elect of the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) for 2016-17.

Hellebrand, who has been an ANNA member and leader for 12 years, is Chief of Clinical Operations/Vice President Education for DialyzeDirect, Neptune, NJ. As president-elect, she will serve on the ANNA Board of Directors and as liaison to assigned committees. When she steps into the ANNA President position in 2017, she will work with other ANNA officers at the helm of one of the country’s largest nursing associations.

A respected ANNA leader, Hellebrand has served as a member of the National Board of Directors, as Northeast Chapters Coordinator-Elect, Chapters Coordinator, and on the All Region Executive Committee. She has held many other leadership roles at the local and national levels and is a noted author and mentor for ANNA members.

Along with Hellebrand, several other individuals were elected to the 2016-17 Board by ANNA members. They are:  

  • Secretary (2 year term): Jennifer Payton, MHCA, BSN, RN, CNN, of Goose Creek, SC, is Home Dialysis Clinical Coordinator at NxStage Kidney Care, Charleston, SC. She has been a member of ANNA for 17 years. During that time, her service includes the following positions: President of the Palmetto Chapter, State Health Policy Advisor for South Carolina, and Southeast Region Health Policy Advisor. She has also had active roles on many ANNA committees and task forces. As secretary, Payton will be responsible for all meeting minutes, correspondence, and project management. She will also ensure all policies and procedures are up to date and in compliance. 

Directors: ANNA directors serve for 2 years as liaisons between the board and committees. They are also assigned to special projects and other board initiatives.

  • Director: Tamara Kear, PhD, RN, CNS, CNN, of Doylestown, PA. Dr. Kear is Assistant Professor of Nursing at Villanova University, Villanova, PA, research consultant for Main Line Health, and a nephrology nurse with Fresenius Medical Care in Doylestown, PA. She has been a member of ANNA for 20 years serving in a broad variety of roles at the national and local levels. These include Chair of the ANNA Research Committee (2014-2015); Nephrology Nursing Journal (NNJ) board member, and editor for the Exploring the Evidence column in the journal. She has also worked in author and editor roles for ANNA’s major publications and in 2014 was a co-investigator for the first national nephrology nursing patient safety culture study. Dr. Kear actively lobbies for ANNA, serves on the association’s Education Committee, and is deeply involved in evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Director: Caroline Steward, MSN, RN, APN-C, CCRN, CNN, of Ewing, NJ. Steward is an advanced practice nurse at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, Trenton, NJ. She has been an ANNA member for 22 years and has worked in nephrology for more than 30 years. Steward has been an active member of many ANNA committees, most recently she was involved in a task force for revising Chronic Kidney Disease: What Every Nurse Caring for the CKD Patient Should Know. She is also a member of the ANNA Acute Care Specialty Practice Network and a member of the Leadership Development Committee.

All new officers will be inducted during the ANNA 47th National Symposium in Louisville, KY, in May. They will join the other 2016-17 Board members: President Sheila Doss-McQuitty, MBA, BSN, RN, CNN, CCRA; Immediate Past President Cindy Richards, BSN, RN, CNN; Treasurer Sue Cary, MN, APRN, NP, CNN; Director Gayle Hall, BSN, RN, CNN; and Director Angela Kurosaka, DNP, RN, CNN, NEA-BC.
