‘It’s All About the Mentoring,’ Says Cindy Richards, New President of the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association

PhotoPITMAN, NJ – It didn’t take the new president of the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA), long to issue a challenge to her nurse colleagues.

“I’m calling on every experienced nurse to find a novice nurse and be a mentor and role model,” said Cindy Richards, BSN, RN, CNN. “If all our expert nurses did this, can you imagine what the outcome will be?”

Richards announced the call to action, the “Pay it Forward” Challenge,” during her induction speech on April 21, during the association’s 46th National Symposium in Florida.

“Every nurse needs a mentor, but this relationship doesn’t always happen,” said Richards, a Birmingham, AL, resident who will serve as ANNA’s president for a 1-year term. “With this program, the expert nurse will develop specific goals with the novice nurse or nursing student. Mentors will share their knowledge and experience, lead by example, guide, and nurture.”

The campaign is open to ANNA members. Any nephrology nurse who wishes join the association is welcome to participate.

Richards’ announcement was enthusiastically received by her ANNA colleagues at the induction ceremony, held during the annual Nephrology Nurse Recognition luncheon on Tuesday, April 21. At the ceremony, which was attended by ANNA leaders, volunteers, and members, outgoing ANNA President Sharon Longton, BSN, RN, CNN, CCTC, handed the presidency over to Richards and wished her successor well.

As president, Richards will lead one of the country’s largest nursing associations. During her term, she will serve on the ANNA National Board of Directors and as liaison to assigned committees. She will helm the association as it implements its strategic plan, which includes promoting excellence in nephrology health care, as well as providing a broad range of services to ANNA’s 9,500 members.

Richards is a pediatric renal transplant coordinator at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, AL. She has been a nephrology nurse for 27 years, working first in dialysis, and then in transplantation since 1996.

She has served ANNA in many roles at the local, regional, and national levels including president of her local chapter and chair of the ANNA Nominations Committee. She also served on the ANNA Board of Directors as Southeast Vice President/Director in 2012 to 2014.
