Change and Progress on the Horizon for the American Nephrology Nurses Association, Says New President Sheila Doss-McQuitty

PITMAN, NJ – Sheila J. Doss-McQuitty, MBA, BSN, CNN, CCRA, the new president of the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA), is a true team player who believes in collaboration.

“In the coming year, the ANNA Board of Directors will maintain transparency, asking all members to give feedback on the direction ANNA is heading and the events and projects we are undertaking,” she told an audience of nephrology nurses during her induction ceremony at the recent ANNA 47th National Symposium in Louisville, KY. “The Board considers feedback a gift.”

Doss-McQuitty, who is from San Jose, CA, is one of ANNA’s most respected mentors and leaders. She has won several awards and has served the association in many leadership roles for almost two decades. At the symposium, she accepted her new role from outgoing ANNA President Cindy Richards, BSN, RN, CNN, during the association’s May 3 Nephrology Nurse Recognition Luncheon.

During her 1-year term, Doss-McQuitty will serve on the ANNA National Board of Directors and as liaison to several committees. She will helm the association as it implements its strategic plan, which includes promoting excellence in nephrology health care, as well as providing a broad range of services to ANNA’s 9,500 members.

In her speech, Doss-McQuitty outlined several of the Board’s far-ranging goals and issued a call to action.

“We believe the status quo is no longer enough,” she said. “We need to focus on a new direction, growing our membership and focusing our goals while demonstrating that our work is making a positive difference for our members.”

Doss-Mcquitty also thanked several individuals for the mentoring and support they have given her over the years. These included Dr. Brigitte Schiller, many patients and ANNA mentors, and most importantly, ANNA Past President Sally Burrows-Hudson.

Doss-McQuitty has been an ANNA member for 19 years. Her contributions span many areas, and much of her volunteerism has been at the grassroots level, working directly with ANNA members to encourage them to get involved in ANNA and help them advance personally and professionally.

She is also passionate about advocacy initiatives, working to ensure ANNA’s agenda and the voice of nephrology nurses is heard by legislators both nationally and locally.

Her ANNA roles have included:

  • Specialty Practice Networks (SPN) Board Liaison
  • ANNA Director, 2013-14
  • Nephrology Nursing Journal Editorial Board member
  • Western Region Vice President/Director
  • Western Region Health Policy Advisor
  • National Health Policy Committee Chairperson
  • Northern California Chapter President

Doss-McQuitty’s ANNA awards include the 2012 Research Sharing Award, the 2012 Research Abstract Award, and the 2009 Kelly McManus Memorial Award for Home Hemodialysis.

A registered nurse for 38 years, Doss-McQuitty currently works as Director of Clinical Programs and Research for Satellite Healthcare, Inc., in San Jose.

She lives in San Jose with her husband, Harold, and Jacq, their Scottish Terrier. Sheila is an avid and dedicated Kansas City Chiefs fan and loves watching football and reading murder mysteries.
