Donna Braun, BSN, RN, CNN Nurse Manager, Inpatient Dialysis St. Cloud Hospital St. Cloud, MN Greater Minnesota Chapter #329 How long have you been in nursing? I have been in nursing for 15 years. How long have you been in nephrology? My entire nursing career has been spent in nephrology. I was a stay-at-home mom with three children and went back to college and completed my BSN when my youngest child was in first grade. I began my career as an inpatient dialysis RN, transitioned to the charge nurse role, and am currently managing an inpatient dialysis unit. Why do you love nephrology? I was attracted to nephrology because of the hours — no rotating days and nights — which fit my family’s needs at the time. I enjoy the team environment and the complex patients we care for. I enjoy caring for not only patients on hemodialysis, but also for patients on peritoneal dialysis or apheresis. What is your favorite ANNA member benefit and/or what do you love about being a member of ANNA? My favorite ANNA member benefit has been the opportunity to attend the ANNA National Symposium and Volunteer Leaders Workshop (VLW) — now known as the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Workshop. In 2017, I was able to attend the Capitol Hill Day, which was an amazing experience. The knowledge and friendships you gain from these experiences are invaluable. I enjoy bringing the information I have learned back to my team at work — to help us all grow in our knowledge in nephrology. I also appreciate ANNA for the resources it provides along with ANNA Connected, where you can join a discussion on a hot topic and learn and grow from other members’ experiences. Do you have a favorite patient story that reminds you why it's all worth it? I was involved in interprofessional collaboration to bring care closer to home for a patient with a ventricular assist device (VAD) who was recently initiated on dialysis. The patient lived in a rural area and commuted approximately 2.5 hours to receive dialysis outpatient treatments. Through the collaboration of our hospital VAD coordinator, the referring health system’s VAD coordinator, and nephrology, we were able to successfully achieve the patient’s goal of receiving dialysis treatments close to home. The multidisciplinary team trained both the inpatient dialysis staff and the chronic dialysis staff to care for VAD patients. This patient was able to receive dialysis near to home and once again be able to do what he loved to do in his spare time – fishing. What are your favorite hobbies and/or pastimes outside of nursing? I love to spend time with my two granddaughters. My husband and I also enjoy traveling and on beautiful Minnesota summer days, we enjoy riding our Harley.
