How long have you been in nursing?

I have been a nurse since 1979: almost 38 years.

How long have you been in nephrology?

I have worked in nephrology since 1989: 28 years, 24 of them in renal transplantation.

Why do you love nephrology?

I learn more about nephrology and dialysis every day. ANNA Connected certainly helps me to be familiar with varying practices in nephrology from around the country and this benefits my patients and our inpatient dialysis unit.

What is your favorite ANNA member benefit?

My favorite benefit are the friendships I've made and the networking with talented, knowledgeable people from all over the country. In fact, I just had a great phone call with one of my favorite ANNA friends today!

Do you have a favorite patient story?

I have been working on a care plan for a complicated patient to ensure continuity of care from the outpatient dialysis unit to the transfusion unit in the hospital where I work. The patient has had multiple blood transfusions, has ESRD, sickle cell disease, and COPD. She is a very sick woman, but we want her to live her best life. She is appreciative of all we do for her.

What are your favorite hobbies outside of nursing?

I enjoy exercising, healthy meal planning and cooking, and decorating our home.

What’s an interesting fact about you?

I am a devoted mother of three wonderful daughters. My youngest daughter and her friend have recently achieved bachelor’s degrees in nursing. I hope that I have inspired them in their career choice.
