The American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) is proud to announce that Lou Ann Leary has been appointed Executive Director and Celess Tyrell has been appointed Chief of Staff.
Lou Ann Leary Named Executive Director
Lou Ann has served ANNA in multiple capacities throughout her tenure, demonstrating steadfast dedication to the association’s mission. She has held several leadership roles at Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc., overseeing staff and managing operations for several nursing associations.
For the past 33 years, she has collaborated closely with ANNA’s chapters and committees, supporting the association’s mission at both local and national levels. She also served as Interim Executive Director for six months, ensuring seamless leadership during a period of transition.
Most recently, Lou Ann served as ANNA’s Chief of Staff, overseeing daily operations and guiding staff across the organization. She worked extensively with the Conferences Committee to plan high-quality educational programs, coordinating ANNA’s two national events. She also served as a liaison to the ANNA Board of Directors, implementing Board meetings and events, providing administrative support, and engaging with external stakeholders.
“I am deeply committed to our nephrology nurses and the exceptional care they provide to patients every day. Working alongside the ANNA President, Board of Directors, and volunteer leaders for more than 30 years has been a true privilege. As I step into the role of Executive Director, I look forward to building on ANNA’s strong foundation—strengthening programs, enhancing member engagement, and supporting the growth of the nephrology nursing profession.”
Celess Tyrell Named Chief of Staff
Celess Tyrell has been part of the ANNA team since 2005, bringing two decades of experience supporting the association’s educational and digital initiatives. She has managed ANNA’s online learning programs, coordinated webinars and virtual events, and helped expand access to high-quality educational resources for nephrology nurses.
Celess has collaborated closely with volunteers, speakers, subject matter experts, board members, and staff; participated in strategic planning discussions; presented at ANNA’s Lead Workshop; and guided volunteers as programs and member needs evolved. She contributed to the growth of ANNA’s Online Library, supported member-focused programs, and launched ANNA’s early social media efforts, fostering engagement in the online community.
In her new role as Chief of Staff, Celess brings deep institutional knowledge, a collaborative approach, and a strong commitment to ANNA’s mission and the nurses it serves.
“For 20 years, I have had the privilege of serving ANNA and building meaningful relationships with its leaders along the way. Stepping into this new role allows me to continue supporting ANNA’s leadership as they advance their mission and serve the remarkable nurses who make it possible. Nephrology nurses touch lives every day—improving not only individuals’ lives but also the lives of their families. It is a privilege to support them in any way I can, and I look forward to continuing that work.”
