Describe your qualifications for this role, and include past ANNA leadership positions:
I have been part of ANNA leadership for many years. Past roles include committee membership and leadership at the chapter, Regional, and National levels. As past Chair of the Leadership Development Committee, I was inspired to encourage increased volunteer involvement in the association and nephrology nursing. I currently serve as the liaison to ANNA Membership and Student Membership Committees and mentoring efforts. I’ve held multiple chapter/national positions. I have participated in the Advocacy Forum as part of the Health Policy Committee, representing my chapter, and the board. I have advocated in Washington, DC and locally by inviting representatives to visit local dialysis units. I represented ANNA, in joint virtual meetings, with elected representatives, on Kidney Community Advocacy Day in collaboration with ASN, NKF, and AAKP to ensure one voice to move policies, impacting our patients, forward.
Past board experiences include Regional Vice President (now Director) and Treasurer. As Treasurer, I implemented strategies to mitigate potential decline revenues and keep ANNA fiscally sound, without impact to member services/resources. I worked on key strategic initiatives to implement programs to adjust to the changing needs of membership and championed efforts that foster forward thinking for online resources and volunteer leadership.
My years of clinical practice provide me with an understanding of the current landscape of nephrology, including legal and financial implications. My years of increasing responsibility in ANNA volunteer leadership, provides me with the necessary skills to serve as National President to keep ANNA as the premier nephrology nursing association.
Describe your role in three ANNA projects/activities which support(ed) ANNA’s mission, goals, and objectives:
I have been involved in many changes in ANNA over 3 decades.
Advocacy
A strong advocate and member of the Health Policy Committee, I led a group to examine and update resources. The Nephrology Nursing Journal article on delegation to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) was found to be > 7 years old. I recruited colleagues to update the article. We contacted each state to determine the authority for certain clinical tasks performed by UAP and LPNs/LVNs in hemodialysis. Published in 2021 as the first living document on the journal webpage. The content is updated as members provide current information. The article was recognized by NNJ for an Education Writing Award.
Networking/Membership
While on the Board, worked with volunteers in the development of SPN’s, redistributing the workload. In 2015-2016. I was chair of the team recruiting leaders for the specialty groups. I am currently liaison to Membership, Student, and Mentorship teams. We have added several strategic initiatives; extending student membership, student honor cords, and mentoring program.
Science/Education
I have authored numerous ANNA publications. As an author of the Nephrology Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, 9th Ed., expanded advocacy and added respect, equity, and inclusion section. I have authored section/s in the Contemporary Nephrology Nursing, Core Curriculum for Nephrology Nurses, and the Certification Review Guide. I am a section editor for the Core Curriculum, 8th Ed, which is in progress. I arranged a financial series for members for education on budget, debt to income ratio, and cyber security.
