John Thompson, MSN, RN, CNN, is a nephrology nursing leader with over a decade of experience in dialysis operations. He began as an LVN in 2016, advancing to RN in 2019 and progressing through clinical and leadership roles including Charge Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, Facility Administrator, and National Educator. In 2024, he became Regional Director of Operations, overseeing multi-site performance, quality, and regulatory compliance. He is active in ANNA, serving as President-Elect of the Alamo City Chapter and contributing nationally on the Administration Committee, Education SPN, and ACST Team. In 2025, he earned Nurse Executive certification, strengthening his leadership expertise.

John Thompson, MSN, RN, CNN, is a seasoned nephrology nursing leader with over a decade of progressive clinical and operational experience in dialysis care. Beginning as an LVN in 2016 and advancing to RN in 2019, he has held roles including Charge Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, Facility Administrator, National Educator, and currently serves as Regional Director of Operations, overseeing multi-site performance, quality outcomes, and regulatory compliance. He holds a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus in Administration and Leadership and earned national Nurse Executive certification in 2025, strengthening his expertise in healthcare strategy and organizational leadership. His professional influence extends through active engagement with the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA), where he served as President-Elect of the Alamo City Chapter and contributes nationally on the Administration Committee, Education SPN, and ACST Team. This combination of executive operational leadership, advanced education, and national professional service positions him to effectively serve as a Director on the ANNA National Board of Directors, contributing to strategic governance, member advocacy, and advancement of nephrology nursing practice.

Describe your role in three ANNA projects/activities which support(ed) ANNA’s mission, goals, and objectives:

John Thompson, MSN, RN, CNN, has actively contributed to advancing the mission, goals, and objectives of the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) through leadership, advocacy, education, and global engagement. His work reflects a sustained commitment to strengthening nephrology nursing practice and improving outcomes for patients with kidney disease across diverse settings. He participated in ANNA’s Advocacy Forum in both 2024 and 2026, supporting national legislative and policy initiatives that elevate the role of nephrology nurses and promote access to high-quality kidney care. Through these forums, he engaged with national stakeholders and contributed to advancing advocacy priorities aligned with ANNA’s mission. He also supported the development of the profession at the local level by helping establish the Coastal Bend Chapter #281 in Corpus Christi, Texas, expanding access to professional networking, education, and engagement opportunities for nephrology nurses in the region. John has further advanced global nephrology nursing standards through medical mission work in Guatemala in 2022 and 2024, providing direct patient care, supporting local clinical teams, and reinforcing evidence-based dialysis practices in resource-limited settings. In addition, he has served for 10 years as a Cabin Nurse at Roundup River Ranch supporting Kidney Week, and as a Medical Advisory Committee member and Nephrology Subject Matter Expert, contributing to safe, specialized care delivery and educational programming for children with kidney disease.
