Improving Patient Outcomes: Ozempic Now FDA-Approved for Kidney Disease

The FDA has approved Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic (semaglutide) to treat chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults with type 2 diabetes, expanding its role beyond glycemic control. CKD affects over 35 million U.S. adults, with diabetes being a leading cause. Clinical trials demonstrated that Ozempic reduced the risk of death in patients with diabetes-related kidney disease, leading to an early trial stoppage due to significant benefits.

This approval highlights the evolving role of GLP-1 receptor agonists in managing diabetes-related conditions, reinforcing the importance of comprehensive care for patients with CKD.

ANNA Member Spotlight: Kristin Beth Uebel, MBA, MM, HEA, BSN, RN, CNN

Each month, ANNA highlights the unique experiences and perspectives of a member with our Member Spotlight. This month’s ANNA member in the spotlight is: Kristin Beth Uebel, from Windy City Chapter #305!

Beth says nephrology nursing is unique because it “…has provided me career advancement and opportunities that other areas of Nursing may not have. It allows a sense of autonomy while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team that focuses on patient care. Most nurses do not realize that Nephrology nursing is a specialty that has so many different modalities to choose from.”
