How long have you been a nurse?

What is unique about nephrology nursing?
Nephrology nursing is an entity of its own. In nephrology nursing, we rely on each other's expertise and experience because the community is small compared to other nursing specialties. Nephrology nursing focuses on the entire patient because the kidneys impact every system of the body. Therefore, nephrology nurses must keep abreast of being "in the know." I enjoy that nephrology nursing has its own set of specialties, such as dialysis (in-center, peritoneal dialysis, and home hemodialysis), inpatient services, chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), pre-ESRD, technology and technology advancements, informatics, and various educational platforms, etc. Nephrology nurses extend beyond dialysis settings, hospital settings, nephrologist offices, and collegiate settings. Nephrology nursing is so diverse. There is an aspect to fit one's talent and skillset throughout your nursing career.
What do you value most about your ANNA membership?
I value the Nephrology Nursing Journal, the ANNA website, the camaraderie of professional nurses through ANNA Connected, and lately the virtual conferences. I get extremely excited about ANNA webinars especially when there are contact hours provided. I have such appreciation that ANNA offers me the opportunity to get published once I scale down my DNP study. I value my experiences as a chapter member and national committee member. I also contributed to manuscript feedback and participated in the Health Policy Workshop, which was the best experience ever! I also am a recipient of an ANNA scholarship. I believe ANNA's contribution to future nephrology nurses is valuable to me.
Do you have a favorite patient story?
We had a patient who was a retired nurse, and she was so impressed by the care that our unit provided to her and the other patients when I was in a clinic manager role. The patient wrote the president of the company unknown to me and my team. We were featured at one of the company's national leadership conferences. This was my favorite career story because we were just doing what we enjoyed – providing care to our patients and seeing them thrive. We did not know the patient wrote the letter until the camera crew came to the unit to film us.
What would you tell a newly practicing nurse about nephrology nursing?
Hang in there. It only gets better, and your personal and professional growth is never ending and very rewarding!
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working as a nurse?
Spending time with my husband and young adult daughters just watching TV. I am a true foodie, love watching TV, and enjoy walking the distance of a half marathon monthly.
Share an interesting fact about yourself.
I could probably dance all night or at least place first in a dance marathon. I love to move to the music. I am very artistic naturally and can paint and draw. No surprise to most, I am a Wonder Woman fan!
