What is unique about nephrology nursing?
Nephrology nursing is a specialty that allows you to learn something new every day. It allows you to interact with amazing individuals, both patients and the interprofessional team. It allows you to be the educator that any nurse should be, and it allows you to see positive outcomes with your interventions. Nephrology nursing is a discipline that challenges you every day and requires you to be up to date with the newest clinical guidelines.
What do you value most about your ANNA membership?
ANNA membership allows me to be in an association that makes my voice heard. We advocate for our specialty, and I see the results. We also meet frequently with like-minded people, and we stay educated on subjects that pertain to our discipline. I also like the social aspect of being a member – talking to my colleagues, organizing events, asking for clinical expert opinion, and sharing my knowledge and enriching myself with others’ knowledge.
What would you tell a newly practicing nurse about nephrology nursing?
Nurses coming to nephrology will be happy to discover a very rewarding specialty. You are surrounded by a knowledgeable group of people, so you will not be alone. You will learn a lot about subjects that will enrich your clinical background. Unlike the hospital experience, you will be exposed to the same patients, so get ready to get attached to your patients. Know that as a new nephrology nurse, you are going to have extraordinary mentors and you will never be alone. You are going to be rewarded professionally by seeing improved outcomes, sometimes in a month. You can change someone's life in a positive way every day as a nephrology nurse. These are some reasons that made me stay in this amazing specialty!
Share an interesting fact about yourself.
Before embracing nephrology nursing 7 years ago, I was a journalist in Europe in various countries. I speak four languages, and I have a book published in French, which is available on Amazon France. Living in various countries, I have a different view of health. I strongly believe in integrative medicine that combines the benefits of allopathic medicine with complementary medicine. I value and respect other people’s cultural values and beliefs related to health. I have my own practice of functional medicine that I started during the pandemic, in addition to working as a nephrology nurse at Cleveland Clinic Florida.
