How long have you been a nurse?

I have been a nurse since 1992. Nursing is a second career for me. I previously was in the U.S. Navy and worked at several military bases. I became an LPN in 1992 and an RN in 1994. I earned a BSN in 2003, MSN in 2005, Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (ACNS) in 2006, and Pediatric CNS (PCNS) in 2011.

How long have you been in nephrology?

I have been a nephrology advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) since 2006 at a large central Illinois nephrology practice. I care for patients with a variety of renal disease processes in an office setting and also care for in-center hemodialysis patients.

What is unique about nephrology nursing?

Nephrology nursing is a very specialized and highly technical area of nursing. I did not have dialysis experience prior to becoming an APRN, so this is a doable career choice for novice APRNs.

What do you value most about your ANNA membership?

The networking and conferences are the most important benefits of ANNA membership for me.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working as a nurse?

I am passionate about criminal justice reform and volunteer with an Illinois independent prison reform organization. In 2020, I was honored to receive the Prison Monitor Volunteer of the Year Award.

Share an Interesting fact about yourself.
